Sponsor Spotlight: Applied Materials Foundation
Creating meaningful pathways into STEM often begins with the people around you who believe in the value of investing in young minds. It takes partners who are willing to champion confidence, foster belonging, and create opportunities so students can discover what they are capable of achieving. Through its support of the FIRST Like a Girl EdTECHquity Collaborative, the Applied Materials Foundation is helping turn that belief into action by expanding opportunities for students across Texas. The collaboration between FIRST in Texas and the Applied Materials Foundation is rooted in a shared commitment to ensuring that every student, especially girls, has the support and encouragement needed to explore their interests and pursue their ambitions.
Programs like FIRST Like a Girl are designed to address a well documented challenge. While many girls begin their educational journeys with strong interest and aptitude in math and science, research shows that confidence and engagement can decline over time due to factors such as limited representation, fewer visible role models, and societal barriers. By investing in initiatives that prioritize empowerment, leadership development, and hands on learning, the Applied Materials Foundation is helping shift that narrative. A defining strength of this partnership is the active involvement of Applied Materials employees, who bring real world experience and mentorship directly to students. In 2025, the company welcomed a group of students to its Austin campus for a technology challenge that allowed participants to engage with engineering concepts in a professional environment, while volunteers offered guidance, encouragement, and insight into careers in the technology sector.
Beyond hands on activities, Applied Materials team members have participated in panels where they share their personal journeys, discuss the skills needed to succeed in STEM fields, and answer questions from students eager to learn more about potential career paths. These interactions help demystify the world of technology and show students that there is a place for them within it. Investing in programs that build confidence early is essential for long term impact, and the Applied Materials Foundation recognizes that supporting initiatives like FIRST Like a Girl EdTECHquity helps shape a future workforce that is diverse, innovative, and prepared to solve complex challenges.
The Foundation also champions collaboration across the broader STEM ecosystem. By supporting connections between FIRST Like a Girl and other Generation Girl partners such as GirlStart, Latinitas, and similar organizations, they are helping create a network of programs that reinforce one another and expand opportunities for students. At its core, this partnership reflects a shared belief that empowering students today creates stronger communities tomorrow, ensuring that young people gain not only technical skills but also confidence, leadership abilities, and a sense of belonging that can influence their futures in meaningful ways.
We are deeply grateful for the Applied Materials Foundation’s partnership in advancing our mission to inspire and prepare young people to become innovators, leaders, and problem solvers. Together, we are expanding opportunities for students across Texas to explore STEM, discover their potential, and envision futures filled with possibility!
