FIRST® Access

Engaging Youth in STEM Exploration with FIRST Access

FIRST® Access opens the door for students with disabilities and special needs to take part in STEM through hands-on robotics. This program ensures every student can experience the excitement and opportunities that come with being part of FIRST. FIRST is for everyone! By creating accessible pathways, we empower students to learn, grow, and shine through robotics.

Who Can Join

Teams may consist entirely of students with disabilities and special needs, or they may be unified teams made up of equal numbers of students with and without disabilities. In unified teams, students without disabilities serve as partners or peer mentors, supporting their teammates throughout activities.

What Teams Do

Teams build and program robots to compete in FIRST Tech Challenge or LEGO® Robotics competitions. FIRST in Texas offers these options, in addition to traditional FIRST competitions, so that teams can choose a program that best meets the needs of their students.

Support for Teams

Teams of high school students are eligible to receive grants for robotics kits, materials, supplies, game sets, and fields. To find out more information about how to start a team or how to participate in our FIRST Access State Events, reach out to our FIRST ACCESS coordinator

Volunteer with FIRST Access

Be part of the excitement by supporting teams, events, and students across Texas. Even if you only have a few hours to give, your contribution makes a difference. With opportunities for a wide age range of volunteers (13+) and roles that span both technical and non-technical skills, there’s a place for everyone. From mentoring and judging to event support, you’ll work side by side with students and help inspire the next generation of innovators!
