Volunteer Spotlight: Dewayne Higgs

Volunteer Spotlight: Dewayne Higgs

01.15.2026

For Dewayne Higgs, volunteering with FIRST® in Texas has meant stepping into whatever role is needed to help students and events succeed. Dewayne has been part of FIRST in Texas since before the very first Amarillo FIRST Robotics Competition District Conference, and over the years, he has worn many hats including Volunteer Coordinator, Referee, and Safety Manager. Today, he serves on the FIRST in Texas FRC Advisory Council and continues to support the Amarillo District Conference in any capacity needed!

Dewayne’s journey with FIRST in Texas began at the ground level. He was involved in the initial community meetings when the idea of bringing a new FRC district conference to Amarillo was first being discussed. From those early planning conversations to seeing the event come to life, Dewayne has been part of building something lasting for students and volunteers in the region.

One moment in particular has stayed with him. As the Volunteer Coordinator for the first Amarillo FRC District Conference, Dewayne remembers setting up the volunteer table and laying out the volunteer shirts. It was in that quiet moment that the reality set in. The event was really happening. That realization, seeing the vision become real, is a memory that has stayed with him ever since.

What continues to motivate Dewayne is the dedication and creativity of the students. Watching teams design, build, and refine their robots year after year never gets old. The complexity of what students accomplish consistently amazes him and reinforces why these events matter.

Volunteering has also shaped Dewayne personally. Through his work with FIRST in Texas, he has gained a deeper perspective on life and the importance of stepping outside of everyday routines to support others. Giving time and energy to help students and fellow volunteers has brought him a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Dewayne’s commitment, flexibility, and willingness to serve wherever needed exemplify the heart of FIRST in Texas. We are grateful for the many ways he continues to support our community and help make these experiences possible for students across the state.
