How You Can Advocate for Inclusive STEM in Your Area
What is FIRST Access?
FIRST Access opens the door for students with disabilities and special needs to experience STEM through hands-on robotics. The program ensures that every student can feel the excitement, confidence, and belonging that comes with being part of a FIRST team.
Through FIRST Access, students build and program robots to participate in FIRST Tech Challenge or LEGO Robotics competitions in a way that meets their individual learning needs. FIRST in Texas offers these flexible options in addition to traditional FIRST programs so schools, families, and educators can choose the model that works best for their students.
How You Can Advocate for Inclusive STEM in Your Area
You do not need to be an expert in robotics to make a difference. Advocacy starts with awareness and connection.
-
Share the FIRST Access mission with your school administrators, special education teachers, counselors, and parent groups.
-
Encourage schools and community centers to explore starting a FIRST Access team as part of their existing special education or after-school programming.
-
Invite local educators, therapists, and community leaders to attend a FIRST Access event so they can see firsthand how students engage, collaborate, and grow.
-
Volunteer your time or skills to support a team, whether that means mentoring, helping with events, or spreading the word.
-
Partner with local organizations that serve students with disabilities and special needs to expand access to robotics and STEM experiences.
Together, these small steps help build sustainable, inclusive STEM opportunities that empower every student to explore, create, and succeed!
