Major FIRST Tech Challenge Control System Updates

Major FIRST Tech Challenge Control System Updates

12.16.2025

FIRST Tech Challenge released two significant updates this week regarding the future Control System and the new universal actuator. If you haven’t seen them yet, we encourage all coaches and mentors to review the official posts:

What’s Changing?

Control System Transition Timeline

  • The new Control System will become competition-legal for FIRST Tech Challenge teams starting in 2027–2028.

  • There will be a multi-year transition period through at least 2030–2031, during which both the legacy system and a hybrid approach will remain legal.

  • FIRST has explicitly stated that this runway is designed to reduce financial pressure and maintain a level playing field during the changeover.

A Single Standard Actuator

FIRST has also announced the A301, a new standardized actuator that will eventually become the single legal option across programs. This is another long-term shift, and details are still emerging.

We Know This Is a Big Change — and You’re Not Alone

Coaches are already asking the right questions:

  • How will this affect our budget?

  • When will we need to start purchasing new equipment?

  • What are the expected price points?

  • What does this mean for rookie teams or teams with limited resources?

FIRST in Texas is watching these developments closely. We know major system transitions bring uncertainty — and we want teams to feel fully supported, not overwhelmed.

Here’s what we can promise:

  • We are actively monitoring every update as it is released.
  • As price points, grant opportunities, and transition guidance become available, we will share them statewide.
  • We will poll and survey coaches to understand needs, concerns, and cost pressures.
  • We are committed to helping Texas teams bridge this transition smoothly — financially, technically, and operationally.

If you have early thoughts, concerns, or questions you’d like us to capture as we prepare next steps, please share them here:
