Volunteer Spotlight: Erika Diggs
Sometimes, all it takes is a bit of preparation (like reading the game manual) that comes in handy at just the right time. Erika’s journey began in 2014 as a student in both FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Robotics Competition. After graduating in 2018, she stayed connected to the program and stepped into volunteering. When a Head Referee could not make it, Erika stepped in as the only one who had read the game manual, and that moment turned into a lasting role.

From her early days in the Panhandle to now serving as a Regional Head Referee in DFW, Erika has become a trusted and steady presence for teams and volunteers. Alongside her roles as a FIRST Access Program Leader, Interim FIRST LEGO League Program Leader, and Interim Central FIRST LEGO League Program Delivery Partner, she balances multiple responsibilities throughout the season, all with a focus on supporting students and creating a positive experience at events.
One moment that continues to stand out to her happened at Cowtown, an FTC off-season event, when a group of students she had worked with over the years during their final season approached her and said, “Erika, you were our first Head Referee, can you be our last?” It was a full-circle moment that reminded her of the lasting impact volunteers can have. For Erika, that impact is what keeps her coming back. Her goal is to see students grow into volunteers, joining her on the field in the future and carry the joy and inspiration they experienced into the next generation.
Erika has built a reputation as someone people can rely on. Whether it is helping a student understand a call or guiding a new volunteer through their first event, she is always there with encouragement and support. She believes that experience builds confidence and makes it a priority to stand alongside new volunteers until they feel comfortable. From their first call to their first full event, she makes sure no one feels like they are doing it alone.

Through her time with FIRST in Texas, Erika has seen the community grow stronger and more connected. She has gained a deeper appreciation for the work happening behind the scenes and values being part of a team that listens to and supports the community.
When the season gets busy, Erika leans into the pace. There is always another event, another team, and another opportunity to make an impact. That momentum keeps her motivated and excited for what is ahead. As she puts it, “FIRST is such a large part of my world that it is second nature to get excited about what comes next.”
Her advice for anyone thinking about volunteering is simple: just do it. Erika adds, “If you are in DFW, stop by any of our events and say ‘Hi!’ We are always looking for volunteers who want to have fun.”
What started as simply stepping in has turned into years of showing up, leading, and making a lasting difference for students across Texas.
